What is in-home pet caregiving?

In-home pet caregiving is a service that provides scheduled visits to your home to care for your pets in their own environment.  We come to your home where your pets are surrounded by the sights, smells and sounds with which they are familiar, reducing the stress they experience while you are away.  An in-home pet caregiver provides services, anywhere from 1 to 4 times per day (as well as overnight visits),  to your pets while you are away and at Precious Pet Care  our services include "Away-from-Home" care while we care for your pets, such as picking up your newspapers & mail, turning your blinds or alternating lights.  We love and care for your pet as if they were our own and respect your home.

Why an In-Home Pet Caregiver instead of boarding my pets?

Keeping your pet's schedule as close to "normal" as possible reduces the stress they encounter when they are removed from their environment.   We understand that we can never replace you in your pet's eyes, but we go to great lengths to extend the empathy, care and love that your pet requires while you are away.  When you take your pets to a kennel, vet or other type of boarding facility, you risk your pet being exposed to illness and disease. With our services you never have to worry that your pet is being kept in a cage or run and left there alone after hours or on the weekends. At a boarding facility, your pet's feeling of security is compromised by an environment with unfamiliar animals and people.  Additionally, the stress that is involved in transporting your pet to the boarding facility (for you, as well as your pet) is eliminated with our services.  You don't have to worry about what time you leave and what time you return home and if the boarding facility will be open at that time.  When your pet stays at home their stressors are greatly reduced (plus, we are a lot of fun & love to care for your pet!).

Who will be coming to my home?

Precious Pet Care is family owned and operated by the McPartland Family.   We are committed to providing exceptional, trustworthy and confidential care to our clients. We have lived in Williamson County since 1998 and are proud to call this area our home.  You will meet your pet caregiver at your initial consultation because we feel it is extremely important for your pet caregiver and pets to meet and interact and for you to know who will be taking care of your precious pets.  We do, however, in the busy months (such as holidays or busy vacation/travel months) have the assistance of two of our  close family friends, Mrs. Ashley and Ms. Megan. Mrs. Ashley and Ms. Megan assist us so we can continue to offer the great services that we provide; both are experienced pet caregivers and we consider them both part of our family and know that they will extend the same level of compassion, care and professionalism that you require. Mrs. Ashley typically cares for our clients in Spring Hill and to the south, while Ms. Megan handles a large percentage of our overnight visits.  We are blessed to have both as part of our Precious Pet Care family.

How often should I have my pet caregiver come to my home?

You are the expert on your pet's daily needs.  Our experience is that dogs require a minimum of 2 visits per day (although most our clients request 3 to 4 visits per day) so that they can be cared for, played with and visited with.  For your dog's well-being, it is important to minimize the time that your dog spends alone while you are away and insure that your dog is given enough exercise, care and attention (not to mention love & treats!).  Although cats can be more independent than dogs, they absolutely need human interaction and care a minimum of one time per day.  Depending on your cat's personality, they may need extra play-time or lap time to feel comfortable while you are gone.  Your cat should never be left alone for an extended period of time and expected to fend for themselves with some extra food and water and no supervision or interaction.  Your cat's litter box needs to be maintained daily to prevent the spread of bacteria and, potentially, disease.  Most cats will not use a litter box that has not been cleaned.  We will talk with you at our initial consultation and come up with a schedule that meets the needs of you and your pets.

What services do you offer for horses? Horses can be tricky, are you experienced horse people?

Precious Pet Care prides itself on our extensive equine experience and the care we provide to your horses while you are away.  We have over 25 years of equine experience including equine care, education, training, competition and pleasure.  We recommend 1 to 2 visits per day for horses.  We maintain their feeding schedule and can facilitate separating multiple horses to make sure each horse's individual nutritional needs are met (no bullying or food hogging allowed while you are gone!).  We make sure that your horse's water is fresh and that any supplements or vitamins are given on schedule.  Your horse may need to be turned out during the day and returned to their stall in the evening.  We also provide seasonal care, such as removing their blankets during the day and replacing them at night and turning on/off fans or heaters in the summer or winter months, as needed.  Precious Pet Care freshens your horse's stall to minimize the build-up of feces and urine.  We can also offer complete stall change-overs, exercise, lead-work and round-pen work for an additional fee while you are away.

Do you care for any animals other than dogs, cats and horses?

Yes.  We have experience caring for all sizes and types of animals and  are happy to care for your birds, hamsters, guinea pigs, gerbils, fish, rabbits, hermit crabs, lizards, small snakes or iguanas!

Should I be concerned about my  privacy having a "stranger" in my home?

By the time we are invited into your home to care for your pets we hope that you will not consider us "strangers".  We will discuss these concerns with you at your initial consultation and trust that you will feel extremely confident about your decision to have us care for your precious pets and home while you are away.  We respect your privacy and maintain the highest standards of confidentiality.  We treat your pets and home with the same level of care and respect that we would require for our own family pets and home.

Are you bonded and insured?

Yes.  We are Members of the National Association for Professional Pet Sitters and are both bonded and insured.  For more information you may visit the NAPPS website at www.petsitters.org.

Do I need to leave a key to my house with my pet caregiver?

We do require a key to your home and are happy to accept the key at our initial consultation.  If you would like, we can discuss arrangements for a key to be left for us the day that we begin our services.  Our Contract for Services will set forth the details regarding the exchange of your house key.  We understand that you are trusting us with the key to your home and we maintain a high level of security with respect to house keys, alarm and/or gate codes.   Most of our clients entrust us with their house key so that they can contact us for services at a moment's notice if they are required to be out of town for business or emergency reasons so that they know that their pets will be cared for.

I work long hours and need someone to come to my home mid-day to care for my pet(s) while I am at work. Do you offer these types of services?

Yes.  We understand that work schedules can sometimes be long and even unpredictable.  We are happy to come to your home while you are at work and care for your pet.  In situations where our clients work long hours, they often find it a relief to have us come to their home while at work to check on their pet(s), provide exercise, play time and/or company.  We can even send you a text message or give you a call to let you know how your pet is doing!

How and when do I pay you?  What types of payment do you accept?

We only accept cash or checks.  Payment in full is required before services are rendered.  For new clients, payment in full is required at the initial consultation once you choose to retain our services and your services are scheduled. For existing clients, you may make arrangements to leave the payment at a designated place in your home so that we can pick it up the first day on which our services are rendered.

What if I need to cancel?

We understand that situations may arise in which you need to cancel our services.  We would appreciate as much notice as possible with regard to any cancellation.  We do not charge a cancellation fee, however, if you are a new client and you need to cancel we will retain your payment to be applied to future Precious Pet Care services.  Both new and existing clients who do not notify us that they need to cancel prior to one (1) hour of their scheduled visit will be charged the standard visit fee for the services that were to be provided.

My pet has special medical needs and requires medication. Can you give medication to my pet?

Precious Pet Caregivers can take care of nearly all of your pet's needs including administering medication, supplements, vitamins, insulin, subcutaneous fluids, allergy injections,  assisting geriatric pets, applying ointments and giving ear drops.  Our services may also be necessary if your pet has had surgery or a medical procedure that requires multiple visits daily to attend to your pet or give medication and care.  We will discuss your pet's specific needs with you to make sure they are well cared for and their individual needs are met.

What if my pet becomes sick while I am away and needs veterinary care?

Precious Pet Caregivers travel in full size SUVs or vehicles that can accommodate transporting pets needing medical care.  We will make every attempt to bring your pet to your veterinarian of choice listed on our Contract for Services, however, if we are unable to do so, we will take your pet to the closest emergency veterinarian.  You are responsible for all veterinary charges incurred for services rendered to your pet whether provided by your veterinarian or an alternate veterinarian of our choice.

We do not, however, transport horses in need of vet care.  Should your horse require equine veterinary intervention while in our care we will contact an equine vet and request that they come to your home including, but not limited to, equine vets that we know and have personally used for our family horses, such as the DVMs at Tennessee Equine Hospital in Franklin and/or Dr. Dan Smith, DVM.

We will make every attempt to reach you should the need for intervening veterinary care arise while your pet is in our care.

Do you offer overnight and extended pet care services?

Sometimes our clients just feel better knowing someone they trust is staying in their home while they are away.  Our overnight services allow you to know your pets are being provided the comfort & care they need overnight and that an extra level of security exists by having someone stay at your home.
Precious Pet Care offers overnight pet and home care services to our clients who may require pet care services overnight.    We also offer extended overnight pet care services for our clients who are taking extended vacations or travel extensively for work.  There is no need for your precious pet to spend all that time alone or in a boarding facility when they can remain in the comfort and security of their own home.  Please remember that the holiday season, as well as spring break and the summer months, are an extremely busy time at Precious Pet Care and our ability to provide overnight services is limited.  Please call (615) 545-9091 early to schedule these services.
